"I have lived
and worked in Sydney since 1969, and have always been conscious
of access issues because of a deteriorating muscular condition
that was weakening my legs and making stairs and walking more
and more difficult. However in October 1996 I had an accident
which badly broke one of my legs, this was the catalyst for putting
me in an electric wheelchair (electric because my arms were also
too weak to push a manual). Since then I have dealt with many
accessibility issues and learned how to overcome or manage them
to minimise the effect on my independence and my ability to earn
an income.
It was during
my own plans to travel internationally that I realised the potential
plight of the mobility impaired and wheelchair dependent traveller.
There are too many issues involved in this subject to deal with
here, but suffice to say if you are dependent on an electric wheelchair
and have ever planned to travel internationally you will have
become aware of the risk of damage in transporting your chair
by aircraft. Yet in most cases if you want to travel you have
no choice.
I decided,
particularly in light of the forthcoming Olympics/Paralympics
in Sydney in 2000, that I would develop a service to allow people
who need electric wheelchairs to be able to travel to Australia,
Sydney especially, without the enormous stress involved in bringing
their own chair. In other words they would be able to rent a chair
and even other required equipment when they get here. I also believe
there is a real need for a small highly personalised tour service
that can take people in wheelchairs to see tourist sites, areas
and shopping centres that are GENUINELY ACCESSIBLE!! and all wheelies
know that what most AB's (abled bodies) describe as accessible
is simply nowhere near it!!
So here it
is, Wheelchair Accessible Australia and Wheelchairs To Go, I will
endeavour to provide for every clients need personally, I intend
to be flexible but advance bookings will be necessary.
See you in
Sydney!"
