The
Blue Mountains Wonderland
Duration: 8 hours (9.30am start)
Travelling
west from Sydney we pass the historic city of Penrith nestled
on the banks of the Nepean River. Then we start our ascent through
many charming small towns and villages, stopping first at stylish
Leura for a comfort stop, coffee break and perhaps a stroll down
the pretty main street. Next
we move on to the thriving Blue Mountains capital of Katoomba.
Here we will delight in magnificent views of the mountains major
valleys, gorges and peaks including the world famous Three Sisters
rock formation. The bird and plant life here is exotic and plentiful
and there is time to marvel at the mind-expanding beauty and the
many wonders of nature.
Next, lunch
(at own expense) will be taken at one of many accessible mountain
restaurants or coffee houses, according to the taste of the passengers.
This will be discussed with the driver en route but could include
such places as the newly renovated 19th century Hydro Majestic
hotel at Medlow Bath, with its unbelievable views and very pleasant
atmosphere.
Now, on to
the pretty Rhododendron town of Blackheath. Here there is a
no
cost option (weather permitting) of a wheelchair accessible walk
through a totally unspoiled Australian gum tree forest. An
easy
1.8kms (1 mile) stroll, comfortable for both manual and battery
powered wheelchairs. This is a truly great experience, which
ends
at the awe inspiring Govett's Leap lookout.
But all good
things come to an end and so we head back to Sydney via an even
more scenic route through the rich fruit growing areas of Bell
and Bilpin and two of most historic pioneering towns in Australia,
Richmond and Windsor. Time for a comfort stop and the chance to
buy a memento or two.
